VIRTUOPO (VIRTUAL STUDY COUNSELLOR) IS AN INFORMATION SERVICE ON QUESTIONS RELATING TO CAREER PLANNING, STUDYING AND WORKING AIMED AT IMMIGRANTS AND OTHER SPECIAL GROUPS.

Virtuopo offers information in Plain Finnish, Finnish and Finnish Sign Language. The content of the different language sites has been edited to meet the needs of each user group. The Plain Finnish pages contain information aimed for example at immigrants, whereas the Finnish Sign Language pages contain information pertaining to deaf, hearing-impaired and deafblind persons. The Finnish pages are aimed at everyone, but they also contain information for persons with learning disabilities. The material pertaining to immigrants has been produced in association with the Clinic for Multicultural Counselling at the University of Jyväskylä. Representatives of the target groups, such as immigrants, have been involved in building up the site.

The text of THE PLAIN FINNISH PAGES OF VIRTUOPO is written in easier Finnish than standard Finnish, which makes it easier for you to find basic information about education and working in Finland, even if searching for information in Finnish is still difficult for you. The pages also have a lot of Finnish links, which are useful for getting further information.

The site offers information, among other things, about the Finnish education system, the funding of studies, education and employment opportunities for immigrants and persons with disabilities, as well as the general rules of the Finnish job market. The pages also contain a glossary of general terms relating to studying and career choice explained in easy-to-read Finnish. In addition, the pages contain descriptions of occupations from different fields, and on the career forum a few immigrants talk about their own experiences of studying, applying for a job and working in Finland.

The FINNISH PAGES also contain information that is beneficial to immigrants. The material of the pages is meant for general use by anyone, but the needs of persons with mild learning disabilities have also been taken into account. The Finnish pages contain all kinds of information on “different types of learners” in more detail than the Plain Finnish and Finnish Sign Language pages, the subject matters ranging from health and career choice to post-graduate studies. The site is also useful for teachers and counsellors who work with immigrants!
